May 16 Online Opening of the Pilgrim Year Leiden400

In 2020, four hundred years after the sailing of the Mayflower, the USA, Native Nations, UK and the Netherlands will participate in an inclusive four-nation commemoration. We will commemorate the story of the pilgrims, the cultures and places with which they interacted and do so by focusing on themes that make this commemoration relevant and urgent in the here and now, such as migration, tolerance and oppression. Leiden400 arranges all activities related to this commemoration for the city of Leiden in the Netherlands.

Due to coronavirus measures the official opening was cancelled, but we found an alternative option. On Saturday May 16th, the online opening of the Pilgrim Year Leiden400 will take place. During this online event, which will be in English, you will have ample opportunity to become acquainted with Leiden Pilgrim history. The organization will take you on a city walk through the historic city centre of Leiden, while explaining the fascinating story of Leiden in the Golden Age and the role of the Pilgrims during this period.

You – with Dutch roots – may be interested in our online opening! The opening can be seen via a livestream on our Facebook page – Mayflower400nl. A number of locations and museums linked to the Pilgrims will open their doors for the Leiden400 organization. They will guide you through the exhibitions and their stories by interviewing the directors and curators of the various locations.
